Description
AUTUMN AT WEST FORK OF OAK CREEK by PRISCILLA BURGERS
The best trail in the Sedona, Arizona area is along the lower end of the West Fork of Oak Creek. This stream flows year round through a deep, forested canyon, quite narrow in places, with many beautiful eroded red rock formations. The West Fork joins the main Oak Creek canyon near its north end, about 6 miles south of the point where highway US 89A descends from the flattish, densely-forested land that extends south from Flagstaff into the red rock country around Sedona. The canyon is explorable for many miles beyond the end of the official trail of 3 miles, where wading and even swimming are required in a few places. The 3-mile trail crosses West Fork nine times. I have hiked to this point only twice. Usually, I take so make photographs that I don't make it very far into the canyon. I photographed this image near the beginning of the canyon in the fall. This canyon is one of the very few places in Arizona where maple trees with bright red leaves can be seen in the fall.
