Description
Driving through Prescott Valley, Arizona, I frequently see numerous grazing pronghorn. This is the first time I ever saw a Brahma bull in the field. He grazed for a long time, only occasionally looking up. He seemed to have no interest in several pronghorn that were nearby. Only the pronghorn pictured showed any apparent concern as he quickly passed the bull.
The Brahman or Brahma is a breed of Zebu cattle (Bos primigenius indicus) that was first bred in America in the early 1900s from cattle breeds imported from Pakistan and India. The Brahma is one of the most popular breeds of cattle intended for meat processing and is widely used in Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, United States, Colombia and Australia among many other places.
Brahman cattle are known for their extreme tolerance to heat and are widespread in tropical regions. They are resistant to insects due to their thick skin. Brahman cattle live longer than many other breeds, often producing calves at ages 15 and older.
The pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) is a species of artiodactyl mammal indigenous to interior western and central North America. Though not an antelope, it is often known colloquially in North America as the prong buck, pronghorn antelope, cabri (native American) or simply antelope because it closely resembles the true antelopes of the Old World. Pronghorn can run exceptionally fast, being built for maximum predator evasion through running, and are generally accepted to be the fastest land mammal in the Western Hemisphere. It is often cited as the second-fastest land animal, second only to the cheetah. It can, however, sustain high speeds longer than cheetahs.
