Description
I photographed this great egret from the boardwalk at the Alligator Farm rookery in St. Augustine, Florida. Numerous egrets, wood storks, rosette spoonbills and numerous other birds were flying about, sitting on nests, and spreading their plumage like this egret.
Great Egrets are slightly smaller than Great Blue Herons. They hunt like herons, standing immobile or wading through wetlands to capture fish with a jab of their yellow bills. Great Egrets were hunted nearly to extinction for their plumes in the late nineteenth century, sparking conservation movements and some of the first laws to protect birds. The Great Egret is the symbol of the National Audubon Society, one of the oldest environmental organizations in North America. Audubon was founded to protect birds from being killed for their feathers.

Excellent capture of this Great Egret, and captured at an opportune time, with the spectacular breeding plumage! One of the nicest egret images I have seen! v
