Description
A mountain goat lies on a rock on the summit of Mt. Evans, near Idaho Springs, Colorado. At 14,265 feet, the summit is accessed by the highest paved road in North America. The mountain views are as spectacular as the mountain goats and Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep that call this area home. This photo made a beautiful canvas.
The mountain goat, also known as the Rocky Mountain goat, is a large-hoofed mammal found only in North America. Despite its vernacular name, it is not a member of Capra, the genus that includes the wild goat and domestic goat. A subalpine to alpine species, it is a sure-footed climber commonly seen on cliffs and ice. The mountain goat's feet are well-suited for climbing steep, rocky slopes with pitches exceeding 60 degrees, with inner pads that provide traction and cloven hooves that can spread apart. The tips of their feet have sharp dewclaws that keep them from slipping.
