Description
Pictured is three immature white ibis in a tree at Harris Neck National Wildlife Refuge in Georgia. The word ibis comes from Greek and Latin, and probably from Ancient Egypt. The ibis (plural forms also ibises, ibides, and ibes) are a group of long-legged wading birds in the family Threskiornithidae. They all have long, down-curved bills, and usually feed as a group, probing mud for food items, usually crustaceans. Most species nest in trees, often with spoonbills or herons. There are 28 extant species and 2 extinct species of ibis. This image is also available in a square crop in my wildlife gallery.
