Description
OUR DAILY BREAD by PRISCILLA BURGERS
This iconic building in Silver Plume, Colorado, began its life in 1890 as a grain and feed store but served as a bakery for most of the last century. When I photographed this building, it was Sopp & Truscott Bakery, the old-fashioned Silver Plume bakery where the airy bread and rickety glass cupboards conjured up images of women in petticoats and men working the mines. Stepping into this building was like stepping back in time. After hours, the box on the porch contained unsold bakery items where hungry patrons could help themselves and pay on the honor system. In 2012, after five years as the scrumptious Sopp & Truscott Bakery, the building was turned into Dram Apathecary. Weekdays, the paint-flecked historic building housed the production line of Dram Apothecary, a company that produced teas and cocktails bitters (without preservatives and made with as many wild-sourced Colorado ingredients as possible). On Fridays and Saturdays, the space transitioned into a hipster bar in the mountains where you're likely to rub elbows with artisans, leather crafters, and musicians. After four years, the building has recently become the Bread Bar. The Bread Bar now combines past and present in its decor, with original grain bins, a hanging scale, and an ice box, as well as a small, Colorado-centric book library. Some nights will include fire pits, and the bar will continue to host live music occasionally. Time will tell if this building will remain an idyllic mountain stopover for cocktails and conversation. I for one will greatly miss the old bakery as it once was. This image would pair nicely with my image, The Kitchen Window, which was photographed in the back of this building.
