Quilt barns are a common sight in rural Iowa. However, the place of honor usually occupied by the quilt pattern is filled by a large, visible clock on this barn. Could it be the farmer doesn't want to be a minute late for his meal?
Barn quilts are painted quilt squares, usually fashioned on boards and then mounted on a barn. While cloth quilts are comprised of a series of squares of the same pattern placed together, a barn quilt is almost always a single square. Most barn quilt blocks are made up of simple geometric shapes that include large blocks of color. In many communities, an organized group works together to group their barn quilts into a trail. The pattern for a particular barn quilt may be chosen for various reasons. Often the barn quilt is a replica of a painted quilt that resides on the property or honors a loved one. A pattern may be selected because of its name; Corn and Beans is popular among farmers. The number of documented barn quilts has grown past three thousand. Barn quilt painting has become an entrepreneurial enterprise for many and skilled barn quilt artists are constantly at work.
