Description
A SHELLBOURNE NEVADA RELIC by PRISCILLA BURGERS
A deserted vintage truck lies along Shelbourne Road near the ghost town of Shelbourne, Nevada. Also known as Schell Creek Station, Shelbourne had its beginnings from 1860 - 1861 as a Pony Express station house and corral. The station was used to change horses and riders. Due to indian attacks, It was Fort Shellbourne until 1862. The Overland Stage took over the station until 1869 when it stopped running. Smaller stages continued to run through the area. Gold and silver were found in the area and Shelbourne was a short-lived mining camp from 1871-2, peaking at a population of 400. Remains of the stone and log buildings can be seen at Shellbourne, four miles east of US-93 on private ranch property.
