Description
CAPE MAY SCALLOP FISHING BOAT IN BLACK AND WHITE by PRISCILLA BURGERS
Pictured is part of Cape May, New Jersey's Lobster House Dock, which along with the Wildwood docks make up Cape May’s commercial port. This port is the second-biggest commercial fishing port on the East Coast due to scallop fishing. A plentiful bed of scallops about 75 miles off Cape May, a place called Hudson Canyon, has become a key harvesting spot. Scallops have gone from being an obscure, little-known mollusk in the 1960s to a star in the seafood world, alongside shrimp, crabs, lobster and salmon. The price for shucked and bagged scallops increased from 22 cents a pound in the 1965 to the current price of $14 a pound. Atlantic sea scallops are considered as the most valuable wild scallop fishery in the world. These days, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration keeps a close watch on the scallop harvests, closing down an area for a couple of years to allow scallop beds to repopulate and setting limits on the pounds that can be caught and the number of days per year (currently 180) a boat can go scalloping. Despite its financial rewards, scallop fishing is very physically demanding and can be dangerous too, especially during storms. In 2015, fishing and fishing-related industries had a fatality rate of 54.8 per 100,000 full-time workers, second only to logging, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The fatality rate across all industries was only 3.4. This image is also available in color in my New Jersey gallery.
