Description
This image is a toned interpretation of the interior of a vintage Valentine Diner, located at Classical Gas Museum in Embudo, New Mexico. These diners were manufactured by the Valentine Company in Wichita from the late 1930s into the mid-1970s. Sales of the buildings expanded nationwide, and soon Valentines were all over the United States. Valentines were a big deal in the 1950s. Many are still in use today. Valentines were small eight- to 12-seat diners with a limited menu, making them ideal for a one person operation. They made it possible to operate a business with very little capital. They were pre-fabricated little restaurants, made with counter service only. They could literally roll up a transport truck in the morning to your business site and have you flipping burgers by evening. Classical Gas owner, Johnnie Meier, is planning on selling ice cream out of his when it is completed, which should be soon.
Classical Gas (aka Gasoline Alley) is a museum dedicated to the great American filling station. Museum owner and curator Johnnie Meier, a retired Los Alamos science and technology geek, is an avid collector of old and oily artifacts that might have otherwise wound up in a landfill. He sits on the editorial boards of "American Road" and "Route 66" magazines and also writes freelance pieces for several hot rod publications. Within the Classical Gas collection are colorful oil cans, signs with thermometers, gas pumps and crowns and globes that capped the pumps, old photos and postcards of gas stations, old license plates, ashtrays set into miniature tires, and toy cars, trucks and model gas stations. There are even some 1940s-era Firestone spark plugs in the original box stating that the electrodes contain "radioactive" polonium, the same material recently blamed for the poisoning and death of former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko. Classical Gas is a photographer's and car lover's dream.
