Description
DOOR TO THE PAST by PRISCILLA BURGERS
This ornate and classical doorway has seen better days. This is one of several entrances to the Kerfoot Brothers Store in El Reno, Oklahoma. The Kerfoot
brothers, John S. and and Marian M., came into the new territory of Oklahoma on its opening day, April 22, 1889, and opened the first stores at Kingfisher and El Reno. They had bought "knock-down" material for store buildings, and these were erected at the two towns as soon as the brothers had time to do the work. They were practically the founders of the now flourishing city of El Reno, and in addition to building the first store there they also built the well remembered Kerfoot Hotel, which remained for some years the leading hostelry in the entire state of Oklahoma. The town of El Reno is on Historic Route 66, The Mother Road.
