EASTERN STATE PENITENTIARY IN BLACK AND WHITE by PRISCILLA BURGERS
Eastern State Penitentiary was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world but stands today as a ruin of crumbling cell blocks and empty guard towers. Known for its grand architecture and strict discipline, this was the world's first true "penitentiary," a prison designed to inspire penitence, or true regret, in the hearts of convicts. In reality, the isolation that was meant to bring the inmates close to God drove many of them insane. Built in the countryside in 1829, the penitentiary is now surrounded by the buildings of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This image is also available in color in my Pennsylvania gallery.
