Description
FORT UNION PANORAMA by PRISCILLA BURGERS
Exposed to the wind, within a sweeping valley of short grass prairie, amid the wagon ruts of the Santa Fe Trail, lie the territorial-style adobe remnants of the largest 19th century military fort in the Southwest. For forty years, from 1851-1891, Fort Union functioned as an agent of political and cultural change in New Mexico and throughout the Southwest. Situated in land used by plains and pueblo Indians, Fort Union sat at the junction of the two main branches of the Santa Fe Trail to protect travelers, commerce, and mail routes from increasingly frequent Indian raids. Through the Santa Fe Trail, Fort Union, and the United States Army, Anglo-American culture penetrated the Hispanic and Indian cultures of the region. Fort Union National Monument is a unit of the National Park Service of the United States, and is located north of Watrous in Mora County, New Mexico.
