A 1930's vintage automobile looks right at home in front of a Jacksonville, Oregon store with ghostwriting advertising Levi Strauss overalls. Booming as a mining camp in the 1850's, then evolving as a busy agricultural center and county seat, it declined gradually but never actually died. Its residents have been working hard to preserve its wonderful architectural character. Jacksonville was voted One of America's Top 10 Coolest Small Towns. Just across the border from California, the old gold-rush town of Jacksonville, Oregon is getting its second wind from liquid gold. With 17 wineries located in the surrounding Applegate Valley, and a climate that's ripe for growing multiple types of grapes, Jacksonville is a refuge from the tourist whirl of Napa.
