Description
JEROME ARIZONA - A MINING GHOST TOWN ON A HILL by PRISCILLA BURGERS
A visit to Jerome, Arizona is a delight for photographers, history buffs and shoppers. Historic buildings in this quirky town are in various states of repair and disrepair. On the far left is Lawrence Memorial Hall, popularly known as Spook Hall. This building was the Old J.C. Penney building. Mr. Lawrence was a major contributor to the founding of the Jerome Historical Society and the building is dedicated in his honor. The old concrete shell of a building behind Spook Hall was a market in the past. More recently, it has been a glass blower's studio. Snow-capped San Francisco Peaks can be seen in the background between the two buildings. The building in the foreground is currently The Merchants Gathering gallery and studio of painter, Cody DeLong. Built in 1905, the building was originally the area Studebaker and Mamon dealership. The building was restored as closely as possible to original and is on the National Historic Building Registry. Most of the floor is original, so some of the stains on it could, in fact, be Model A or Studebaker oil. After repeated replacement of the glass windows from vandalism, the bars were added to the building during the renovations to prevent the continued vandalism and theft of materials and building supplies. The gas pump is one of the three originals that serviced the patrons of the dealership.
