Description
JOHN R RICE HORSE BARN OF PRATT COUNTY KANSAS
The John R Rice horse barn is a double-sloped gambrel roof barn that is so large that it can be visible from several miles away. The two-story frame barn is sheathed in lapped fir siding. It still has its original cedar shingle gambrel roof. A traditional central cupola, covered with a gambrel roof, and lightening rod surmount the roof. Pairs of louvered cedar shutters accent each side of the cupola. The barn is on the National Register of Historic Places. The farmstead was built on land homesteaded by John Rice and his wife in 1884. They lived in a dugout until they built their first frame house in 1887. By the time the horse barn was built in 1909, the Rice's owned 27 horses. The horse barn is an example of the gambrel roof barn type, which evolved in the twentieth century. These barns were large, constructed with balloon framing. The open spans in the loft provided storage space for hay. Before the advent of tractors, these horse barns were essential on large farms. The Rice barn comfortably housed 24 horses. It was also used to store crops such as hay and grain, shelter other livestock, house farm equipment, and was the location for preparing feeds and performing numerous other chores.
The Fine Art America logo will not appear on your finished product.
