Description
Image is a painterly view of Murray's Mill, built in 1913, in Catawba, North Carolina. Calm water from Balls Creek creates beautiful reflections in the pond. Water softly flows over the dam which was raised six feet in 1938 and stands above the original wooden dam that is below the surface of the pond. At that time the 28 foot waterwheel replaced the former 22 foot overshot waterwheel. In a visit to the mill, one can also step back in time at the 1890s Murray & Minges General Store, the 1880s Wheathouse, the 1913 John Murray House, furnished to the period, and numerous outbuildings. Run by three generations of the Murray Family, the mill's doors were shut in 1967 due to bureaucratic red tape and increasing taxes. The picturesque structures and surrounding land form the last milling complex in the county, meticulously preserved and interpreted by the Catawba County Historical Association. When the CCHA overtook the mill's restoration in 1980, the bins still held flour from the last day of operation.
