Description
The Nevada City Barber Shop was originally located in Elkhorn, Montana, across from the Fraternity Hall. Built in the 1870s, Charlie Hoffman ran this shop until the early 1900's. In about 1941, Charles Bovey was given the "Elkhorn Trading Co." big store by the Murphy McClay Hardware Company of Great Falls, who owned it. While in Elkhorn getting ready to disassemble the Elkhorn Trading Co. store, a group of men arrived with sledgehammers and crowbars and started to tear down this barber shop. Charlie persuaded them to tell him the name of the owners. He bought the shop and had his own crew carefully disassemble it. Inside were, amazingly, most of the furnishings, which are still there today, including the red plush chair, the marble sink, the mirrors, and pictures, shaving mug cabinet, and even the zinc bath tub. The Barber Shop was in "Old Town" in Great Falls until 1959 when it was brought to Nevada City.
