Description
St. Mary's Parish dates to 1846 with the arrival of German settlers in Fredericksburg, Texas. Construction of Old St. Mary's Church, pictured in the foreground, replaced an earlier log structure. The fine Gothic features of Old St. Mary's (Die Alte Kirche) are exhibited in it's distinctive steeple, pointed-arch windows and stone buttresses. Rapid membership growth during the late 19th century prompted St. Mary's Church to complete plans for a new sanctuary in 1901. This Gothic-inspired native stone structure, pictured in the background, features an asymmetrical front facade with a dominant corner tower and spire containing three bells transferred from the nearby 1863 sanctuary. Both buildings are Texas Historical Landmarks.
