Description
ONE DEGREE OF SEPARATION by PRISCILLA BURGERS
This young pronghorn is separated from the adult pronghorn by a barbed wire fence. While deer and elk jump over such fences, pronghorn typically make their way under them. The pronghorn is the fastest land mammal in the Western Hemisphere, being built for maximum predator evasion through running. It is often cited as the second-fastest land animal, second only to the cheetah. It can, however, sustain high speeds longer than cheetahs. The pronghorn often demonstrates its propensity to run when a photographer is aiming a camera at it. These pronghorn were photographed in northern New Mexico, where they are frequently seen.
