Description
PRONGHORN ON ALERT by PRISCILLA BURGERS
Part of a large herd of northern New Mexico pronghorn turns to study us before they run off toward the hills. Pronghorn, commonly called antelope, live in open grasslands of southwestern America, but they can frequently be seen in northern New Mexico. Pronghorn are capable of running several miles at one time and can reach speeds of up to 60 mph. The pronghorn is the fastest land mammal in the Western Hemisphere, being built for maximum predator evasion through running. They are the second-fastest land animal, second only to the cheetah. Pronghorn are nomadic, and usually move long distances, depending on the season. In the winter, pronghorn tend to herd together, often sleeping and eating near each other.
