Description
ROSEATE SPOONBILL by PRISCILLA BURGERS
This roseate spoonbill has been hanging out at Gilbert Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch in Gilbert, Arizona for three months. Commonly seen in Florida and Texas, it is speculated that this bird flew off course due to a hurricane. It is widely believed that the reason for the bright pink plumage of the Roseate Spoonbill is due to the algae eaten by the Crustaceans that these birds consume (in a similar way to the Flamingo but not quite as bright). Since this spoonbill has been away from the coast for at least three months, his pink color has faded.
