Description
El Rancho Hotel, a National Historic Site n downtown Gallop, New Mexico, is considered the grande dame of Route 66 lodging in New Mexico. This beautiful hotel has played host to many leading movie stars since it opened in 1937. Between 1940 and 1964, numerous actors, including Ronald Reagan and Robert Taylor, stayed at this Route 66 icon while filming in the area. Errol Flynn allegedly rode his horse into the bar while staying there. John Wayne stayed so frequently he had his own room next to the bar. Signed photos of hundreds of other notable guests are on display inside the inn. Other highlights include a rustic, double curved staircase in the lobby and eye-catching stained glass windows in the bar. The inn has recently been restored and now provides motel accommodations in addition to its original, more spacious guest quarters. It continues to offer, in the words of its slogan, "the charm of yesterday, and convenience of tomorrow."
