Description
SUMMERTIME AT TROUT LAKE by PRISCILLA BURGERS
Two paddle boarders are fortunate to have Trout Lake to themselves on this beautiful summer day. This lake can be enjoyed near Lizard Head Pass while driving the highly scenic San Juan Skyway in southwest Colorado.
Trout Lake is the primary storage reservoir for the historic Ames Hydroelectric Plant which is a 3.75 megawatt facility originally built in 1891. It is famous for being the first site in the world to generate alternating current that was transmitted and sold for industrial purposes. L.L. Nunn and George Westinghouse applied the alternating current theories of Nikola Tesla to generate electricity at Ames, providing the power to the Gold King Mine. The nearby ghost town of Alta sprang up as a company town for the Gold King Mine, which was discovered in 1878 and operated through the 1940s. Ore was transported in aerial tram cars from the Gold King and other Alta mines to the Ophir Loop two miles down the mountain. Because the cost of hauling coal to the Gold King was exorbitant, the mine experimented with electrical generators, and the Gold King was one of the first mines in the country to use electricity.
