Description
THE BENT DOOR ON HISTORIC ROUTE 66 BY PRISCILLA BURGERS
The Bent Door was a roadside business in Adrian,Texas that has functioned in a variety of roles over the years, primarily as Tommy's Cafe in the early1960's, then as a general store and souvenir stand. Robert Harris built the Bent Door in 1947 and in 1995 saved it from demolition. Mr. Harris passed a few years ago, before he could restore the property. The name derives from the fact that the bent door and some windows were salvaged from a World War II airport control tower. The tower windows originally slanted toward the runway, so the door was bent to match. If there is one thing that makes Adrian stand out among the lore of the old highway it is that it is the halfway point between Chicago and Santa Monica on Historic Route 66.
