Description
THE GREAT PINECONE DROP by PRISCILLA BURGERS
To welcome in the New Year, New York City drops a ball, Nashville drops a musical note, and Flagstaff, Arizona drops a pine cone. Rising three stories above Flagstaff's historic downtown, the six-foot tall Pine Cone was hoisted into place like a giant holiday ornament to hang from the Weatherford Hotel in November. The Great Pine Cone has become a New Year's Eve tradition since 1999 when the Weatherford Hotel rang in the new millennium and honored the Weatherford Hotel's 100-year anniversary. Since then, thousands gather in the streets for the countdown into the New Year and the lowering of the Pine Cone. A pine cone was chosen for the drop since Flagstaff is located in the largest contiguous Ponderosa pine forest in the world. This towering tree only grows at elevations between 6,000 and 8,000 feet, making Flagstaff's 7,000-foot elevation the perfect home.
