WESTON GRIST MILL by PRISCILLA BURGERS
Weston Grist Mill lies on the banks of the West River in Weston, Vermont. In 1780, Ezekial Pease built a small dwelling and sawmill on the banks of the West River. The original mill burned in 1900 and was replaced by a one story structure. It was returned to its original and present design in 1936, at which time it was converted to a grist mill. In those years, the mill was managed and operated by members of the Orton family. A small portion of the operation in those days was a mail order business of milled grain products. From that grew today's famous Vermont Country Store, which is located down the street from the mill. Tighter health regulations enacted in the late 1950s forced the closure of many small country mills, including this one.
