Description
WILLOW LAKE AT PRESCOTT ARIZONA by PRISCILLA BURGERS
Willow and Watson lakes lie in northeastern Prescott, at the southern end of the spectacular Granite Dells area. Both lakes provide a variety of recreational opportunities, ranging from boating and fishing to hiking, bird watching and picnicking.
Until Prescott purchased Willow Lake (formerly Willow Creek Reservoir) in 1998, the Chino Valley Irrigation District regularly drained the lake, allowing cattle to graze in the lakebed. The Granite Dells area, mostly north of Watson Lake and east of Willow Lake, is a wonderland of weathered rock formations strewn along Granite Creek. It was a popular place to picnic for early residents of Prescott. A pavilion was built there in 1903; a dance hall followed later. In the 1920's, the Garden of the Gods Resort was built in the Dells, just upstream from the present-day dam. It featured Prescott's first heated swimming pool, a petting zoo and cabins that attracted hundreds of guests. Over the years it lost its luster and finally closed in 1970.
