Description
A bat is captured in mid-flight as it approaches a vibrant, century plant flower against a pitch-black background. The bat's wings are fully extended, revealing the delicate structure of its membranes, while it seems to be navigating towards the flower, likely in search of nectar or insects.
I photographed this bat in Madera Canyon, south of Tucson, Arizona. Arizona, and especially Madera Canyon is known worldwide for its hummingbirds. Driving up Madera Canyon on a beautiful Spring day, the roadside was blanketed with numerous wildflowers of all kinds. I was excited since I was going there to photograph hummingbirds. Little did I realize that there would be an unusual absence of hummingbirds at the numerous feeders at Santa Rita Lodge because they were so attracted to the wildflowers. Undaunted, I was pleased to be able to capture several wonderful shots of the numerous Mexican long-tongued bats that came out at night.
