Description
MOUNT EVANS BIGHORN SHEEP by PRISCILLA BURGERS
A herd of Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep ewes and lambs are being watched by a ram (out of picture) on Mount Evans in Colorado. The road to Mount Evans is the highest paved road in North America. Drive from 8,700 feet at Idaho Springs where you turn off Interstate 70 to 14,240 feet to the summit and you pass through three life zones, passing ancient bristlecone pines and lakes to a land above timberline. It can be 50 degrees cooler at the top of Mount Evans. Mountain goats, bighorn sheep, and marmots are frequently seen near the summit. The views of surrounding mountains are breathtaking.
The bighorn sheep is a species of sheep native to North America named for its large horns. These horns can weigh up to 30 lb, while the sheep themselves weigh up to 300 lb. Sheep originally crossed to North America over the Bering land bridge from Siberia. The population in North America peaked in the millions, and the bighorn sheep entered into the mythology of Native Americans. By 1900, the population had crashed to several thousand due to diseases introduced through European livestock and overhunting.
