Description
I photographed Sunset at the Vatican from the Ponte Umberto I bridge in Rome, Italy on my last memorable night in Rome. On the right is the historic Castel Sant’Angelo in Rome. Pictured is the bridge to it, the Ponte Sant’Angelo, one of the most intact ancient bridges in Europe. The Ponte Sant' Angelo was built in 134 AD by the Roman Emperor Hadrian. It has elegant sculptures of the apostles and 10 angels holding different objects of the passion. In 1669 Pope Clement IX commissioned Bernini to make these sculptures. Pilgrims used this bridge to reach St. Peters Basilica so the bridge was known as the bridge of St. Peter. In the sixth century there was a legend of an angel that appeared at the roof of the castle to announce the end of the plague, so the name of this bridge and the castle were changed to Sant' Angelo. Reflected beautifully in the River Tiber, this image exudes peace.
