Artist's Description
Image is of the aermotor windmill and well at Coal Mine Canyon in northeast Arizona, beautifully lit by the setting sun. An interesting idiosyncratic feature in this desert image is a small rowboat. Printing on metal would bring out the glow in this image very effectively.
The Aermotor Windmill Company is an American manufacturer of wind-powered water pumps. The widespread use of their distinctive wind pumps on ranches throughout the arid plains and deserts of the United States has made their design a quintessential image of the American West. La Verne Noyes, founder of Aermotor Windmill Company, had hired engineer Thomas O. Perry for a different job but saw the potential of the all-metal windpump developed by Perry after extensive experiments. The first Aermotor was sold in 1888, with 45 windmills being sold in the first year. Aermotor soon became a strong competitor among its contemporaries, selling over 20,000 of its windmills by 1892. I was born and raised in the Metropolitan New York City area of New Jersey but have lived in Arizona for forty years. After retiring from high school counseling and teaching, I discovered the joy of photography and digital art. Although I strive to get the shot right in the camera, I enjoy the artistic and creative aspects of working with image editing programs.
