Description
WYOMING PRONGHORN by PRISCILLA BURGERS
A pronghorn leaves his watering hole and heads up the hills at Hutton National Wildlife Refuge near Laramie, Wyoming. The Medicine Bow Mountain Range creates a beautiful backdrop. Wyoming is in the record books as having the most trophy class bucks, per capita, than any other state or region. People flood into Wyoming from almost every other state each fall for their chance to hunt a pronghorn. While the pronghorn population stretches from Canada to Mexico, and from the Mississippi to the west coast, Wyoming and New Mexico top the list for places to go to hunt pronghorn. Wyoming has lots of "wide open spaces" in which to hunt, or watch, pronghorn. It is said that Wyoming even has more pronghorn than people! My choice is to shoot the pronghorn with my camera.
Though not an antelope, the pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) is often known colloquially in North America as the prong buck, pronghorn antelope, cabri (native American), or simply antelope because it closely resembles the true antelopes of the Old World.
The pronghorn is the fastest land mammal in the Western Hemisphere, being built for maximum predator evasion through running. It is often cited as the second-fastest land animal, second only to the cheetah. It can, however, sustain high speeds longer than cheetahs. Compared to its body size, the pronghorn has a large windpipe, heart, and lungs to allow it to take in large amounts of air when running. Additionally, pronghorn hooves have two long, cushioned, pointed toes which help absorb shock when running at high speeds. They also have an extremely light bone structure and hollow hair.
