"ANTELOPE CANYON" by PRISCILLA BURGERS
A long time ago, herds of pronghorn antelope roamed freely in Antelope Canyon, which explains the canyon's English name. These images were captured in Lower Antelope Canyon, which is known as Hasdestwazi to the Navajos, or "spiral rock arches." To older Navajos, entering a place like Antelope Canyon was like entering a cathedral. They would probably pause before going in, to be in the right frame of mind and prepare for protection and respect. This would also allow them to leave with an uplifted feeling of what Mother Nature has to offer, and to be in harmony with something they viewed greater than themselves. It was, and is, a spiritual experience to them. Antelope Canyon was formed by erosion of Navajo Sandstone, primarily due to flash flooding and secondarily due to other sub-aerial processes. I was born and raised in the Metropolitan New York City area of New Jersey but have lived in Arizona for forty years. After retiring from high school counseling and teaching, I discovered the joy of photography and digital art. Although I strive to get the shot right in the camera, I enjoy the artistic and creative aspects of working with image editing programs.
