This small log building is Montana's oldest standing public school. Built in 1867 in Twin Bridges, Montana, it served the town until 1873 when a larger school was built. This structure was moved to Nevada City, joining 100 historic buildings dating from 1863 to early 1900. This image was made during a living history weekend in Nevada City. Such events are historically researched and accurately portrayed. Visitors witness what it was like to live in a frontier mining town during the height of the Gold Rush days of the 1860's. There were more children in Nevada City than any other historic mining camp. Many local children actively joined in the activities of the reenactments.
This building is very typical of many rural Montana schools even up to the 1920's and 1930's. The small room in the back is called the "Teacherage" and was used as an apartment by the teacher. I was born and raised in the Metropolitan New York City area of New Jersey but have lived in Arizona for forty years. After retiring from high school counseling and teaching, I discovered the joy of photography and digital art.
