Description
AL CAPONE'S CELL AT EASTERN STATE PENITENTIARY by PRISCILLA BURGERS
Alphonse "Scarface" Capone, usually called Al Capone, spent his time in relative luxury on Eastern State Penitentiary's "Park Avenue." His cell had oriental rugs, fine furniture, and a cabinet radio. Chicago's most famous mob boss spent eight months at Eastern State in 1929-1930. Arrested for carrying a concealed, deadly weapon into a theater, this was Capone's first prison sentence.
Eastern State Penitentiary was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, but stands today as ruin of crumbling cellblocks and empty guard towers. Known for its grand architecture and strict discipline, this was the world's first true "penitentiary," a prison designed to inspire penitence, or true regret, in the hearts of convicts. Built in the countryside in 1829, the penitentiary is now surrounded by the buildings of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
