Description
RED MILL OF CLINTON NEW JERSEY by PRISCILLA BURGERS
Constructed around 1812 just below the confluence of Spruce Run and the South Branch of the Raritan River in Clinton, New Jersey, the Red Mill was originally built as a woolen mill. The building changed hands many times over the following century and was used to process grains, plaster, graphite, and talc. Additionally, the Mill produced peach baskets, generated electricity and pumped water for the town. Due to the changing of owners and industries, the Mill building was enlarged, reconfigured, and renovated several times. The carpenters who added the unique roofline extension did so only to accommodate some machinery in 1908; little could they imagine how this added bit of character would inspire artists, photographers, historians and civic leaders though the century. The Mill area is enjoyed by locals, tourists, fishermen, and Canadian Geese, as seen here, In the 1830's a large stone mill was constructed across the river on the east bank; the proprietors here stuck to grinding grain. This building was extensively rehabilitated and now is the home of the Hunterdon Museum of Art.
