Description

"Colorado Aspen" is a photograph with painterly effects of aspen in fall color near Coal Bank Pass. Coal Bank Pass (el. 10,640 ft.) is a mountain pass in the San Juan Mountains of western Colorado. The pass is traversed by the Million Dollar Highway, U.S. Highway 550 south of Silverton, which is part of the San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway. While the north side is fairly gentle, the descent on the south side is very steep (6.5%), and has a runaway truck ramp for trucks that lose control. It is basically downhill the entire way to Durango.

The beautiful aspen is the quintessential Colorado tree. Towns, streets, dogs, even beer, have been named after the aspen. In the summer, the aspens provide shade for the state flower, the columbine; and when fall foliage comes, 'leaf peepers' travel to Colorado to witness the aspens' quaking leaves turn their vibrant shades of gold. The month of September is the ideal time to witness this gilded spectacle on a scenic drive, but you have to time it right: The color lasts only about a week in most places.
